Briefly Going Back in Time ~ to the Present

In September 1908 about 30 farmers met at the Ellsworth Town Hall and organized the Ellsworth Butter and Cheese Company. This new firm proposed to buy cream and to manufacture and sell butter. Five hundred dollars was raised on the spot to help finance this new company.

On March 3, 1910 a notice appeared in The Ellsworth Record urging all parties who had signed up for creamery stock in Ellsworth Cooperative Creamery, or all other interested parties, to be present at the town hall on Saturday, March 5th at 2 p.m.. It should be noted that at the time co-operative had a totally different meaning than it does now, so anyone could own stock in the company. Today only dairy farmers can hold stock in the creamery.

The new company was organized on a co-operative basis and the capital stocks were valued at $5,000. There were 200 stockholders at that time and a call was issued on stock subscriptions payable March 20.

Today, seventeen different trucks stop at the farms of

+ 500 cooperative patrons picking up and bringing 1,800,000 pounds of milk per day to the creamery. Five machines operate 24 hours a day seven days a week manufacturing 46 million pounds of cheese annually. In addition, 30 million pounds of whey powder are manufactured and distributed each year.

We have over 40 assorted cheeses ranging in tastes from Chocolate to Smoked.

We also have souvenirs, meats and crackers. If you wish to order any of these items, please call the creamery store for more information! 715.273.4311
